Testimonials

We had the rug earlier in the week. We are really thrilled with it, it's absolutely beautiful, and we will certainly come back to you if we need more!

Vicki Fagg, London, United Kingdom

ALRUG came to our rescue in what seemed to be a never-ending chase for the perfect rug. My husband grew up surrounded by genuine Persian/Oriental carpets because his grandparents kept a specialty store. However, when he moved overseas he could only bring a couple of samples, and always wanted a bigger one to match. We kept looking both in local stores and online for almost two years, but nothing seemed to fit both our picky tastes and our means.

After we finally settled on a medium-sized red Bokhara form ALRUG, everything happened so quickly that we couldn't even believe it: the rug appeared on our doorstep two days after I placed the order, even though it was shipped all the way from Pakistan. I was impressed even before I laid it out on the floor: no excessive packaging, the rug was neatly folded and tied with a nice cotton tape, then wrapped in a heavy-duty plastic bag, and then again wrapped in a piece of woven PP sack and stitched tight with cotton twine. Enclosed with the rug was a well-designed certificate of authenticity, as well as detailed care instructions.

The rug itself is everything we expected and even more: soft, thick, lustrous pile; perfect condition, no creases, even though it was folded for shipment; quality craftsmanship, which is obvious from the immaculate pattern-showing backside.

Design Description

The carpet-making traditions of the Middle East and Southeast Asia date back hundreds and thousands of years, and include some of the most beautiful and intricately detailed work in the history of human handicrafts. Many in the West may still know them as Oriental rugs, but that term encompasses a host of highly esteemed regional carpet styles and national rug making traditions, including Indian, Tibetan, Nepalese, Chinese, Pakistani, Turkish, and Persian rugs, all of which can be found here at ALRUG.

Wool is the material of choice for traditional Oriental rugs, and ALRUG offers hundreds of handmade Persian and Oriental wool rugs in all sizes and shapes. Our rug sizes for all materials range from hall and stair runners to rugs smaller than 3 feet by 5 feet and larger than 9 feet by 12 feet - perfect for everything from foyers to grand halls. ALRUG offers exceptional quality and classic regional rug designs at a lower cost.
Our Transitional Rugs collection carries a wide range of carpets that developed over the last few decades with the influence of Persian, Turkoman and Afghan cultures, resulting in rugs of great complexity and superb coloration. With fine natural dyes Chobi, Oushak, Ferahan and Ziegler and vibrant Kazak, Caucasian and Kargai designs, the collection carries the rugs of finest quality and unmatched beauty in all respects. Woven by top class master weavers, these stunningly beautiful rugs has great intricacy and definition in design, super-fine quality. They are a proud symbol of exclusivity the hand knotted carpets can depict.

Ferahan (or Farahan) is located in the central Iran, in the south of Tehran. Ferahan is known for its fine area rugs and carpets that are sometimes known as Mahal rugs in the West for their usage of Herati motifs (diamond lattice through rose blossoms and leaves). The design is generally all-over with turtle (pair of arabesque) border. Ferahan rugs have distinguished colors, mostly on dark-blue, beige and red ground with darker tones than other natural dyes rugs. Handspun wool is used on cotton foundation; the overall feel is of thin, tight pile. They are considered finest pieces of Chobi variety; the colors are strong yet their mellow tonality creates a visually calming experience for the viewer.

More than 500 years ago, the Persians invaded Indo-Pak sub-continent from the northwest, bringing with them their most treasured possessions, their meticulously handcrafted rugs. Over time, this mingling of cultures gave birth to carpets with their own unique themes, delicate patterning and vivid palette of colors. Today, handmade carpets are produced in different cities in Pakistan like Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Dera Ghazi Khan among many others. Considerably less expensive than other rugs of this genre, they are ideal for virtually every room in your home.
Afghan rugs (and more particularly, rugs woven by Afghan refugees in camps in Pakistan) come in a range of designs and qualities. Traditional rugs are dominantly red and very dark blue or black in coloration, although shades of brown and gold also exist. Better Afghan rugs have excellent wool and strong geometric designs from Turkomen and Belouchi sources. Vegetable-dyed rugs in traditional Ersari designs woven as part of the non-profit Cultural Survival project are often very nice, and in the last several years traditional Persian (Heriz, Bakshaish, and recently some fine Feraghan) and Caucasian (Kazak, Shirvan, etc.) designs done with handspun wool and vegetable dyes on wool and cotton warps have appeared. Some of these are exceptionally beautiful and are excellent values.

Peshawari carpet making is believed to have emerged with local resources and skills near the Afghan border and present time Northern Pakistan. This carpet making skill is believed to enjoy the dominance in the carpets market all over the world. Peshawar Rugs are a type of transitional Rugs that are known far and wide for their classic and eastern looks; since they have evolved greatly over time, they seem to be an amalgam of carpets from across various regions that use their own traditional techniques. These carpets have adopted designs and techniques that set them apart; no wonder Peshawari Carpets are adored all over the world.

Chobi rugs (also known as Peshawar rugs) are exclusive, it has derived its name from an area largely settled by Turkoman tribes from Afghanistan. These rugs are often distinguished by their exquisite use of 100% natural (vegetable and mineral) dyes. The wool comes from Himalayan sheep and is hand-spun and hand-knotted with great care and marvelous craftsmanship. Natural dyes produce soft luminous shades and abrashes not possible to obtain from chemical dyes. The influence of Persian, Turkoman and Afghan cultures results in rugs of great complexity and superb coloration. These rugs are new and clean, never used and are in perfect condition.
